Comprehensive Calculator Guide
This calculator works out what a silver piece or bar is worth at today’s price, from its weight, purity and the price per gram of fine silver. A 100 g sterling (925) set holds 92.5 g of fine silver, worth SAR 462.5 at SAR 5 a gram. It also tells you whether your silver reaches the zakat nisab and what the zakat would be.
Purity, nisab and selling
Purity is fine parts per 1,000: 999 is near-pure bullion, 925 sterling is 92.5% silver. World prices are per troy ounce (31.1 g), so the gram price is the ounce price ÷ 31.1.
The silver nisab is 200 dirhams, commonly reckoned at 595 g of fine silver; after a lunar year, zakat is 2.5% of the value. Scholars differ on zakat for jewellery in personal use. Silver traded for silver must be equal in weight and hand to hand, and shops usually buy below the market price.
