Comprehensive Calculator Guide

Running pace is the time it takes you to cover one kilometre: divide your total time by the distance. 5 km in 30 minutes is a pace of 6:00 per kilometre and an average speed of 10 km/h. Enter distance and time to see both instantly.

Pace and speed

Speed is kilometres per hour; pace is minutes per kilometre. Convert either by dividing it into 60: a 6:00 pace is 10 km/h, and 12 km/h is a 5:00 pace. Pace is shown in minutes and seconds, so 5.5 minutes reads 5:30, not 5:50.

Time defaults to minutes, with hours and seconds available: 1 h 45 min 30 s is 105.5 minutes. Distance can be kilometres, miles or metres, but pace is always per kilometre.

Race targets and watch readings

A half marathon is 21.0975 km and a marathon 42.195 km. Enter the race distance and your target time to get the pace you need: about 5:41 per km for a two-hour half, exactly 5:00 for 25 minutes over 5 km. GPS watches can drift near tall buildings, and auto-pause makes pace look faster than your real race average.

How to Use

  1. 01Enter the distance and choose kilometres, miles or metres.
  2. 02Enter the total time and choose minutes, hours or seconds.
  3. 03Read the pace per kilometre and the average speed.
  4. 04For a goal, enter the race distance and the time you want.

Formula Used

Pace (min/km) = time in minutes ÷ distance in km | Speed (km/h) = distance × 60 ÷ time in minutes

Practical Examples

Example 1: a 5K run

5 km in 30 min: 6:00 per km, 10 km/h.

Example 2: half-marathon goal

21.0975 km in 120 min: about 5:41 per km, 10.55 km/h.

Example 3: a brisk walk

3 km in 36 min: 12:00 per km, 5 km/h.

Important Tips

  • In hot weather run early or late and expect a slower pace.
  • Start races slightly slower than goal pace.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Reading a decimal pace of 5.5 as 5:50 instead of 5:30.
  • Using auto-paused watch time for a race average.
