Comprehensive Calculator Guide
This calculator gives the three measures of central tendency, mean, median and mode, plus the range, for any data set, with the working. For the marks 85, 90, 75, 90, 60, 95, 90, 80 the mean is 83.125, the median 87.5 and the mode 90. It also explains which measure suits your data.
Three measures
The mean is the total divided by the count; the median is the middle value once sorted; the mode is the most frequent value. Outliers pull the mean but not the median, which is why salaries are quoted as medians. Only the mode works for non-numeric data.
How to Use
- Enter the data separated by commas or spaces.
- Decimals and negatives are fine.
- Press “Calculate” to see the mean, median, mode and range.
Formula Used
Mean = Σx ÷ n | Median = middle value | Mode = most frequent | Range = max − min
Practical Examples
- Example 1
- Marks: mean 83.125, median 87.5, mode 90.
- Example 2
- 3, 7, 7, 2, 9, 3: mean 5.17, median 5, modes 3 and 7.
Important Tips
- Sort before finding the median.
- A big mean–median gap signals outliers.
- Say which average you used.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Finding the median unsorted.
- Assuming there is always a mode.
- Using the mean with big outliers.
Frequently Asked Questions
