Comprehensive Calculator Guide
This calculator gives the five numbers behind a box-and-whisker plot: minimum, lower quartile, median, upper quartile and maximum. For 6, 7, 15, 36, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 47, 49 they are 6, 15, 40, 43 and 49. It shows each quarter’s width and whether the data are symmetric.
Five numbers and the box plot
The box runs from Q1 to Q3 with a line at the median; whiskers reach the extremes. A longer upper side means right skew, a longer lower side left skew.
How to Use
- Enter the data.
- No need to sort.
- Press “Summarise” to see the five numbers and quarter widths.
Formula Used
Min, Q1, median, Q3, max
Practical Examples
- Example 1
- 6, 15, 40, 43, 49.
- Example 2
- Ages: 3, 7, 15, 44, 70.
Important Tips
- Draw on an even scale.
- Compare the two sides.
- Show outliers as points.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Drawing the box min to max.
- Unsorted quartiles.
- Expecting equal counts in tiny data.
