Comprehensive Calculator Guide

CPM is what you pay for every thousand times your ad is shown: divide the campaign cost by its impressions and multiply by 1,000. A campaign that cost SAR 1,500 for 300,000 impressions has a CPM of SAR 5. It lets you compare campaigns and platforms with different budgets on one basis.

What CPM measures

CPM stands for cost per mille, mille being Latin for thousand. An impression is counted each time the ad is displayed, even to the same person, so impressions differ from reach, the number of distinct people. Impressions divided by reach gives frequency, how often each person saw the ad on average.

CPM, CPC and CPA

CPM is the cost per thousand impressions, CPC the cost per click, and CPA the cost per action such as a purchase or sign-up. All three are spend divided by what you got. CPM and CPC are linked by click-through rate: at a CPM of SAR 5 and a 1% CTR, a thousand impressions bring 10 clicks, so each click costs SAR 0.50.

Most ads are sold at auction, so CPM tends to rise when more advertisers chase the same audience, as in major shopping seasons. Pick the metric that matches your goal: impressions for awareness, clicks for traffic, cost per order for sales.

How to Use

  1. 01Enter the total spent on the campaign, as shown in the ad platform.
  2. 02Enter the impressions for the same period.
  3. 03Read the cost per thousand impressions, in the same currency as the spend.
  4. 04Repeat for each campaign or platform and compare alongside clicks and sales.

Formula Used

CPM = cost ÷ impressions × 1,000

Practical Examples

Example 1: one campaign

SAR 1,500 for 300,000 impressions: CPM = 1,500 ÷ 300,000 × 1,000 = SAR 5.

Example 2: two platforms

SAR 2,000 on each. 250,000 impressions gives a CPM of SAR 8; 400,000 gives SAR 5. Check clicks and orders before moving budget.

Example 3: budget from CPM

To reach 500,000 impressions at an expected CPM of SAR 6, budget 6 × 500,000 ÷ 1,000 = SAR 3,000.

Important Tips

  • Only compare CPM between campaigns with the same objective.
  • Watch frequency: when it climbs, refresh the creative or widen the audience.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Judging a campaign by low CPM alone when it brings no clicks or sales.
  • Treating impressions as the number of people who saw the ad.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does CPM mean?
Cost per thousand impressions: spend divided by impressions, times 1,000.
Is a lower CPM always better?
No. Cheap impressions shown to people who will never buy are worth little. Judge the campaign by the result you want.
How do I turn CPM into cost per click?
CPC = CPM ÷ (CTR × 10), with CTR written as a percentage. A SAR 5 CPM at 1% CTR is SAR 0.50 per click.
What is eCPM?
The same measure from a publisher's side: ad revenue per thousand impressions served on their pages.
